Description

Steel River‘s second album A Better Road features the original band members Bob Forrester (keyboards), Rob Cockell (bass), Tony Dunning (lead Guitar) Ray Angrove (drums) and lead singer John Dudgeon. Two hit singles: “Southbound Train” and “Mexican Lady” as well a a few classic album tracks came from “A Better Road”.

To support their albums and singles in the 70s, Steel River became an international touring success and performed on three major American tours with Humble Pie, Black Sabbath, The James Gang, Melanie, Steppenwolf, Three Dog Night, Edgar Winters, Mountain, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, etc.

Producer and engineer Greg Hambleton signed the original band in 1970 and recorded their first single “Ten Pound Note” (J. Telfer) at Toronto’s Sound Canada Recording Studios.

Ten Pound Note” was the perfect song for Steel River (originally named ‘Toronto Shotgun’), an R&B oriented band managed by a Toronto school teacher Bob Beames. It became an instant smash on Greg’s Tuesday Records label. Stereo Dimension Records in the States and Polygram throughout the world immediately released Steel River’s first album ‘Weighin’ Heavy’ in 1970 followed by ‘A Better Road’ in 1972.
